HERVs

On pages 149-150, Dr. Moalem talks about the way retroviruses and viruses can write themselves into the human genome. This connects with BIG Idea 3 which states "Living systems store, retrieve, transmit, and respond to information essential to life processes." The name for these viruses written into the genome is Human Endogenous Retroviruses, or HERVs.

Talk about why a virus or retro virus would write itself into the human genome and the process by which it would do so. Connect your response to the definition of a retrovirus, specifically making connections to the way it uses reverse transcriptase and the way it transcribes. After determining the effects that a virus could have when written into the genome, research the HERV that Dr. Moalem talks about in creating a healthy placenta and talk about it. (When it was discovered, how important of a role does it play, etc.)
